5 Things To Learn About Kee Fish

A Row of Fresh Kee Fish

The Kee fish is a popular choice for many Singaporean households due to its affordable price.

Here are 5 facts that you should know about a Kee Fish!

1. Kee Fish is also known as the Yellow Fin Snapper!

The Kee Fish is part of the Snapper family and can be distinguished by its conspicuous bright yellow fins and tail, along with a brown stripe across the length of its body.

2. Best Eaten Steamed!

The Kee Fish is a great choice for steaming with its tender, smooth meat. When you steam a sea caught Kee Fish, you can retain its natural sweetness with that fresh sea salt aftertaste! Add just a dash of Soy Sauce and some leeks before steaming and you're good to go.

Or if you're someone that loves beer, try to deep fry the Kee Fish! Pick the smaller ones (keep the bigger ones for steaming) - they are the perfect bar bites to pair with beer.

3. It has many Health Benefits!

White fish, like the Kee Fish, is loaded with many nutrients such as vitamin B6 (fights inflammation), B3 (boosts immune system) and phosphorus (helps to maintain bone structure and density). Also, for those looking for a healthy diet, white fish is a great choice as it is loaded with protein and has very little fat! Protein is essential to help build muscles and feel satiated for longer periods of time.

4. Kee Fish is a Small Fish!

Kee Fishes tend to be smaller sized around 150g-500g, unlike its Snapper cousins like the Red Snapper or Lionhead Snapper. Those fishes can grow up to 5KG! Therefore, the Kee Fish is perfect for smaller households that want to eat fish but can't finish bigger whole fishes.

Also, when they are being caught at sea, they usually come in a huge school so if you manage to get one, you can be sure you'd be able to catch a few more together!

5. Kee Fish is also known as "Kee Her"

If you hear a Singaporean saying "Kee Her", he/she is referring to the Kee Fish! Next time when you are at a hawker or wet market ordering a fish, you can now converse in dialect and impress the older generation hawkers and fish sellers.
